Brushing

Regular brushing helps rid her coat of parasites and dandruff, a benefit to both of you, especially if there are allergies in your family. It keeps the long-haired cat's coat free of tangles, and helps keep the sofa from looking like a woolly mammoth. More important, it helps prevent hairballs from forming in the cat's stomach.

Although grooming tools designed for cats are the most effective, a natural- bristle hair brush and regular, fine-toothed, plastic comb will do. One lady regularly sweeps her cat with a floor broom! First she sweeps one side, then the cat rolls over and she sweeps the other. While that technique is not recommended, her cat apparently loves it.

Brush short-haired cats with the direction of the hair. Brush long-hairs first against the grain of the hair, then back again in the other direction. Remove tangles and mats very gently -- use a wide-toothed comb or, better yet, a mat splitter (available in pet stores). Clip them out if necessary. If her coat is badly matted, let a professional groomer or your vet do the job. Place a newspaper underneath her during the grooming to catch fallout.
