Dog training is a term that covers everything from paper training a puppy to field or obedience training for adult dogs. To further assist you in the proper training of your dog, we’re proud to present DAD’S Training Tip of the Day.

PAPER TRAINING

One of the first things you will want to do is paper train the dog. Select a spot on the floor near his sleeping area or "crate", where a layer of newspaper will be available at all times. Whenever you notice that the pup is getting ready to go, place him on the paper immediately. Praise him when he is finished. Young pups usually have a bowel movement or urinate shortly after eating or drinking and should be watched closely during this period. The more frequently you are able to get the pup to "go" on the paper, the sooner he will become accustomed to going there of his own accord.

When the pup does forget his manners, scold him immediately. A pup has a very short memory and shouting at him about something that happened an hour ago will do more harm than good. You'll be surprised at how rapidly a young dog will learn to control himself. Pups are quick to "pick up" the difference in your tone of voice and have a "sixth sense" that tells them when you are pleased or angry. Most dogs are so eager to please and earn your warm words and praise that physical punishment is unnecessary.
